Seminars

For 2010, the Arizona chapters are planning to offer a full slate of seminars plus a few new ideas on how we can offer you the best learning experiences to improve your modeling skills.

With our theme of “The Art of Scale Modeling” we are planning to focus the seminars on the actual artistic skills used to create the miniature works of art we call scale models.  The techniques used in our hobby – painting, scenery, scratchbuilding, weathering, etc. – are all elements of creating a work of art.  Our seminars will emphasize the artistic aspects of building scale models so that you will go home with more knowledge of how to use these tools and techniques at your home workbench.

A new idea that we are offering is a series of Adult Building Classes (ABC).  These are one-hour sessions with an accomplished modeler who will lead you in a hands-on class where you will actually practice the techniques being taught in the seminar.  It’s akin to a Make’n’Take for adults where you get to build a model and take home the results.  Because you will keep the model used in these sessions and because of the costs of the kits and other materials, we will be charging a fee ($20) to attend each Adult Building Class.  We think this is reasonable for the value you will receive from this unique learning opportunity.

The four ABC topics will include:

  • Painting Figures – Led by Jim Stute, this will focus on painting faces and achieving realistic shadows and highlights on figure models.  Because of the number of techniques planned, this will be a three-part course over a three day period.  The total fee is still only $20 and you take the completed figure home.
  • Armor Weathering – Craig Davis will teach this class featuring the techniques used to capture the wear and tear of the battlefield in your tank models. A kit will be included.
  • Diorama Bases – We will provide a starter set from Woodland Scenics, including a base, ground cover, foliage, etc. to create the perfect backdrop on which to place your scale equipment.  Suzanne Christ will lead the class.
  • Aircraft Weathering - You’ll get to practice that perfectly weathered and faded paint job on an aircraft kit. Roy Sutherland will show you all the tips and tricks, with all the paint and tools included and you take the finished product with you.

Another idea we’re going to try is a number of “Ask an Expert” sessions.  Many seminars seem to run out of time for questions, so we’re going to try having some seminars that focus specifically on questions.  The plan is to ask some of the folks giving seminars to come together as a panel and provide the audience with an open forum to ask any question on a particular topic.  These will be part of the normal seminar schedule and no additional fees will be charged.
